Summary
During Victorian Age, crime rate was a huge issue in London due to poverty, also people moved into cities led crime rate increased rapidly. However, the level of punishment was a lot heavier than today. There were few types of punishments this era such as hanging, transportation, sending to the armed forces etc. Transportation was a punishment that only existed during Victorian era where criminals sent the colonies to serve their sentence. Early mid 19th, Gaols (prisons) were very old and damp, prisoners were treated very poorly and had no privacy or protections at all. They had to work fourteen hours a day with no break except lunch and dinner. Children were also treated strictly from their teachers at school and most of them had jobs outside of school. The three types of court for criminal were Magistrates' Courts, Assize Courts and Court of King's bench. during this era, Prosecutors, judge and jurors had more power than today, and prosecutor was normally the victim of the crime. and trials were shorter than today.
